Artist statement
“The pictures in my childhood books absorbed me quite as much as the words. I’ve always had at least nine lives but unlike a cat I tend to run them concurrently: as a painter, printmaker, designer, poet, arts administrator, parent - I’m sure there are three more I’ve left out. The human body as well as trees, landscape, words and the imagination are central to my work.”
Sue Whitmore studied Fine Art at the Central and Wimbledon Schools of Art, and Philosophy and History of Art at University College London.
After an edition sell-out at the RA Summer Exhibition in 2007 she was invited to join the Greenwich Printmakers last year. Landscape painting takes her all over the world and she mentors landscape courses in the Marina Baja in Spain at Almassera and weekly drop-in Life Classes at the Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn. Her work is in collections in the UK and abroad.
A published poet, her first major book of poems and drawings, “Sue, Realist” was praised for its ‘interplay of poems and drawings from the imagination’ (City Limits). She convenes ’The Brondesbury Group’ in NW London.
She designed for W11 Children’s Opera, for director Chrys Salt, for AAC Opera for All and “Brilliant the Dinosaur” for Richard Stilgoe.
